American Archives is a massive, nine-volume collection of published historical documents detailing the American Revolution and early U.S. history. Compiled by archivist and publisher Peter Force between 1837 and 1853, it covers the period from 1774 to 1783.
The compilation was commissioned by the U.S. Congress under acts passed in 1833 and 1843. Though originally planned for six series, Force only completed the 4th (covering 1774–1776) and parts of the 5th series (covering July through December 1776) before funds were cut and the project was abandoned. The massive set contains thousands of letters, state papers, and debate transcripts.
